  • The town is located at the intersection of the Petersburg-Warsaw and the Moscow-Windau railroad lines. Because the town has a river, lake and is very green, some residents of St. Petersburg visit during the summer months and stay in their country homes (dachas).
     

  • The Rezekne (Rezhitsa) river and the smaller Soltan and Bezymyanyy rivers are at the center of the city.
     

  • The castle on the hill was built in 1285.
     

  • 48 Streets with an average length of one mile each.
     

  • 6 places
     

  • 2,072 houses, among them 307 built of stone.
     

  • 181 petroleum lamps.
     

  • Many public gardens.
     

  • No aqueduct, the residents take their water from the river and wells.
     

  • 2 firemen commandos with 9 fire engines.
     

  • 1 slaughterhouse processed 8,790 head of cattle per year.

 

  • 2 orthodox churches, 1 catholic church, one Lutheran, 2 old believers praying houses, 8 Jewish synagogues, 5 cemeteries.

 

  • 7 primary schools.
     

  • 2 libraries
     

  • 1 hospital with 15 beds, 2 pharmacies
     

  • 6 doctors, 2 veterinarians.
     

  • 6 hotels, 20 restaurants.

 

  • 8 factories with only 59 workers, 105 workshops of craftsmen with 305 craftsmen. A lot of people work out of town, e.g. builders.

 

  • Charity society with 42 members, 1 anti-alcohol society.

 

  • City bank, insurance society, 3 printing houses, 75 cabmen. 1 photography workshop.

 

  • 3 fairs (open markets) annually: January 1, July 2, and September 8: sold agricultural machines, food products, cattle, tools.

 

  • 151 beggars.

 

  • 21 policemen.
