U.S. IRS Tax Assessments Lists 1866: Daniel W. Peck assessments in Salem, Indiana
U.S. IRS Tax Assessments Lists 1866: Daniel W. Peck assessments in Salem, Indiana
This was the District 2 - Annual and Special Lists.

Daniel's occupation in Jackson, Ohio in 1860 was Watchmaker. By 1866 he had moved to Salem, Indiana and continued that same trade. The attached assessment is for income, two gold watches and a retail business.

His income was $947 and the tax is 5% or $46.35
Gold Watch assessed at 1% for tax of $1.00
Gold Watch assessed at 2% for tax of $200

His business of D. W. Peck & Co. is assessed at 10% for $10.00.

He appears to have been rather prosperous for his time. I estimate that $1.00 in 1866 may be worth about $50 today. That means his $927 of income would be about $46,000 in today's dollars (2009). His assessment of %59.35 would be almost $3,000 today.

I wonder how long he continued to live in Salem before he moved to the Terre Haute area?

Up, Awake, Ye Defenders of Zion

By Charles W. Penrose
Up, Awake, Ye Defenders of Zion By Charles W. Penrose
This note is added byGideon Burton: MormonLit@byu.edu

This is a hymn that is wonderfully dated, springing as it does from the 1857 Utah War, in which the Mormons saw themselves audaciously at war with the United States; and, when it was over, felt that they had, with God's will, been granted some kind of victory.

The hymn is sung to the tune of "The Red, White, and Blue."
