| Louis Jacob Culmann (1876-1962) Butcher shop or "nickelodeon"?
Wikipedia.com: Nickelodeon in Toronto, Canada
A "nickelodeon" usually had an elaborate front designed to lure customers. Once they paid five cents, a nickel, to go inside, patrons found hard seats and a drab, dark interior, where they could view a silent movie projected in an individual machine. The "nickelodeon" fad gave way after 1915 to the more comfortable movie "palaces," in which silent movies were projected on a large screen for all to view in relative comfort. Louis decided to put his money in a more stable business, a butcher shop. |

| Louis Jacob Culmann (1876-1962) Postcard (received)
Gerry Sell Ancestry.com:
"Picture postcard of Island House, the home of Edwin Noble, mailed to Louis Culmann in 1909 from "M." (See photo of reverse and transcription.) The Nobles (and their partners the Dexters) were unquestionably the most prominent industrialists in Elk Rapids history. During the latter half of the 19th century they built an empire that included lumbering and milling and an iron works and a chemical plant and shipping and a large company store that sold every darned thing. At the turn of the last century, it all began to fall apart for Edwin. By the time this postcard was sent, he had turned the house and its island over to the Iron Company. In 1949 it was deeded to the Village of Elk Rapids to be used as a library. If you are ever here, you should visit. It is one of the loveliest libraries you will ever see. I do not know what connection, if any, there might be to Louis or "M." It's entirely possible the card was chosen just because it was an interesting scene." |

"Transcription of text in document:
Postmark Elk Rapids Mich Aug 10 8 PM 1909 - with a one-cent stamp
Mr Louis Culmann
1212 N Senate Av
Indianapolis Ind.
Dear Lou, I think that you had better think about starting the Butcher Shop Don't you think a 5¢ show would be better? Dan is going to start one next to his store. With Love, M."
"This postcard (the other side shows a view of Island House, which is now the beloved village library) was mailed from Elk Rapids to Louis's home address. He must have received it - it was postmarked. Nevertheless, the card found its way back to Elk Rapids, and into the hands of a friend who gave it to the library for the photo (which I've also uploaded). I was intrigued by the message, and went looking for Louis. I gather that whoever M was, Louis decided to go ahead with the butcher shop rather than a 5¢ show [i.e., "nickelodeon."] He kept his bakery, but it would appear that Charles E Simon, who moved into 1210 N Senate Avenue by 1910, was the butcher. . . ." |
