Notes |
- George left home as a young man only to return a couple of times. Family lore tells that he served time somewhere out west in prison for safe cracking. He also was injured in a rodeo when thrown into a fence. He did have a steel plate in his head and leg and walked with a rolling limp. He also boxed in the ring taking on all comers when he was younger.
He spent many years with various carnivals, did the electrical work and had joints. I can remember that he and mother had what was described as a cat joint which was stuffed and weighted objects that looked similar to cats. People would throw baseballs at them to win prizes.
We were wintering in Corpus Christi, TX when mother became sick. As the end got near, Dad sent the 3 of us girls to stay with "Aunt" Velma and "Uncle" Curly Jones on the carnival.
After her death, we spent one more summer on the carnival before returning to Corpus Christi. There George worked for Charlie Coombs who owned the Owl Battery Shop and an amusement park and skating rink complex on North Beach. He worked at the battery shop during the day and managed the park at night and weekends for many years.
While at Owl Battery, he invented an alternator/generator tester but never patented it. He also invented a rust proofing process, did patent it but never did anything with it because he had a partner that he didn't trust. He left out a small part of the description so that no one else could make it work. The patent number was 2,899,336, date of application was June 19, 1956. I have all the paper work pertaining to as well as copies of the patent. I also have his will that in case something happened to him, the proceeds from the patent were to be divided equally between us.
He also played the piano by ear and could make up music as fast as he could play it. Sometimes we would beg him to come over to the skating rink and play music for us to skate by. He played the old honky tonk type music which was much more fun to skate to than the records that was normally played.
He was a man of many talents and had his faults like all of us do but kept his 3 girls together and raised them to the best of his ability.
