      "Bolch Genealogy

Johan Adam Bolch and his wife Anna Christina (unknown) landed in Philadephia on 24 September 1753 on the ship Neptune (John Mason, Master) from Rotterdam, last from Cowes. They had two children with them, Jacob who was born in Germany prior to the voyage and Sebastian who was born during the journey.

      [Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA Census, 1772-1890:

      "Johan Adam Bolch, 1754"

No other information about Johan Adam Bolch is contained in this entry in Ancestry.com.]

They settled in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Sometime prior to 1770 the family migrated to Lincoln County, North Carolina.

The last name has been spelled in various ways through the generations including Balch, Balich, Boalich, Bohlich, Bohlig, Bolch, Boleck, Boley, Bolich, Bolick, Boliek, Bolig, Boligh, Bolih, Bolish, Bollich, Bollick, Bollig, Bolligh, Bolock, Bolsch, Boulch.

Johan Adam was a shoemaker by trade. According to family stories, he had considerable property in Germany. Germany had strict limits on the amount of property immigrants were allowed to take with them when they left the country. Johan Adam converted his property into gold which he then melted into thin plates. He made new shoes for the family, with an extra pair for each. He placed the sheets of gold between the soles of the shoes and the family carried the gold to America.

Andreas Balch arrived in Philadelphia on the same ship as Johan Adam Bolch. The next year a Johan Georg Bohlich arrived in Philadelphia on December 13, 1754 also on the Neptune (Walliam Malane, Master) from Hamburg, Hanover and Saxony.

It has been theorized that these three men, Johan Adam Bolch, Andreas Balch and Johan Georg Bohlich were either cousins or brothers. As far as I know, this has yet to be proven. Johan Georg Bohlich and his son Johan Peter were shoemakers by trade. At this time I do not know what profession Andreas pursued."

"Here are more notes I have made regarding Johan Adam BOLCH, the immigrant:

He was born in Germany abt 1725. He died after 13 January 1794 in Lincoln, NC.

He married Anna Christina (unknown) in Germany before 1751. She was born in Germany abt 1728 and died after 1794 in Lincoln, NC.

From the List of Foreigners Imported in the Ship Neptune, John Mason, Master, from Rotterdam, Last from Cowes, arriving in Philadelphia, PA, and qualified 24 Sep 1754:

      'Johann Adam BOLCH'

Johan Adam BOLCH registered in 1757 to pay taxes in Exeter Township, Berks, PA.

Johan Adam BOLCH registered in 1758 to pay taxes in Oley Township, Berks, PA.

Adam BOLOCK was listed as landowner where Conrode SHOWS gets 200 acres (warrant 520) described as on the ridge between Mools and Mecklens Creek, joining Chris Trafflestett and Fifers Land.

Adam and Anna Bolch [probably] migrated to North Carolina between 1760-1770.

Adam BOLCH bought property in Rowan, NC 20 Sept 1770 (I have seen this date transcribed as 1779) state grant #86 (for 320 acres both sides of Elk Creek adjoining Bostain Bolick). This property is willed to Christina and Elizabeth, his daughters. Christina received 'one hundred sixty acres of land adjoining the land of Sebastian being part of the larger tract granted me by virtue of states grant bearing the date September 20th, 1770, situate on both sides of Elk Creek to be divided by a line.' Elizabeth was to receive 'the other half or remaining 160 acres of the aforesaid tract, being the upper or Western part ... adjoining...Jacob Mitchell.'

Adam BOLCH bought property in Rowan, NC 21 July 1774. This property had been held under Royal Grant, a patent of part of land of Henry Schmitt. Adam willed this to Sebastian and to Casper:

Sebastian received the "parcel of land lying and situate on the Western or Northern side of Lyle's creek, adjoin(ing) the land of George Adam Schmitt and another track of my own land.'

Casper received 'all the remainder of the said described tract I bought of the aforesaid Henry Schmitt that is situated in the Eastern or South Side of said Lyle's creek which shall set limits between him and his brother, Sebastian, adjoining Philip Adam and Philip Giger.'

Adam BOLICK was listed 15 March 1780 as neighbor of person getting state grant #122. Location is 'on Anthony Mill Branch called Cedar Swamp...land joins the meeting house road.'

Adam BOLCH bought property in Lincoln, NC, 20 Oct 1782. State grant. This property was willed to Adam, Jr., and to Godfrey. Adam is to receive the 'parcel of land situate on the Eastern side of a division line laid off by
Joseph Rankin in a line of larger tract at the North of a branch on Macklings Creek...being part of a larger tract granted to me by virtue of a states grant bearing the date of 20th day of October 1782.' Godfrey is to receive 'the
remainder of the said tract ...situate on the Western side of said Rankin line...part of the larger tract.'

Adam BOLCH bought property in Lincoln, NC 11 17 Oct 1783, State patent. Reference is made to this grant in a Feme Covert of 1850, land sold to Wm Turner. Land is described as a certain tract on Clarks Creek...Solomon BOLICK's
corner...45 acres originally Adam BOLICK state patent 11 October 1783 'from him by wife to Casper BOLICK' runs along Casper and Bastain BOLCH lines ... Jacob CLINES ... tract by the state to John BOLCH in the year 1811 ... both adjoining said TURNER.

Adam BOLCH made a will in Lincoln, NC, 13 Jan 1794"

      "Chapter 4 JOHAN ADAM BOLCH

Johan Adam Bolch sailed from Rotterdam, Holland, on the ship Neptune and arrived in Philadelphia September 24, 1753. . . . The next record we have is the baptism by Rev. Daniel Schumacher of Johan Adam Bolich, son of Johan Adam Bolich and his wife, Christina on February 8, 1755 when he was 4 weeks old. His sponsors were Johannes Rau (Barbirer, barber) and Maria Ursula.*

Judge Koch says that the record of the Trinity Lutheran Church at Reading shows the baptism of Johannes Adam Bolich as taking place February 6, 1755 in the house at Schwarzwald. Schwarzwald is a small community southeast of Reading in Exeter Township, known today as Jacksonwald. This record establishes the place of residence of Johan Adam Bolch.

Johan Caspar Bolich, son of Johan Adam Bolich and his wife, Christina, was baptized by Rev. Daniel Schumacher February 16, 1757 when 7 weeks old. His sponsor was Caspar Roeder.**

The name of Adam Bolich appears on the list of taxables in Exeter Township, Berks County in 1757, and Adam Bolick on a list of taxables in Oley Township in 1758.***

      . . .

It is not known when Johan Adam Bolich and his family left Pennsylvania, nor where he tarried, nor how long it took to reach his destination. He probably traveled south with other German settlers. From his will we gather that he received a State's grant of land in Lincoln County, North Carolina, September 20, 1770, and a second State's grant October 20, 1782. On the 21st of July 1774 he purchased additional land which had been held under Royal Grant. These grants were probably somewhat similar to the patents of the State of Pennsylvania.

The children of Johan Adam Bolch and his wife, Christina, were: Jacob; Sebastian; Adam; Caspar; Godfrey; Christiana; and Elizabeth.

Jacob Bolch married Maria Salome Grimes on March 21, 1775 in Rowan County, North Carolina.

Sebastian Bolch married Hanna Margaret Heffner February 18, 1776 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. His will was probated in 1822.

      . . .

The descendants of Johan Adam Bolch spell the surname in various ways, the most common being Bolch, Balch, Bolich and Bolick.

      . . .

Casper Bolick (Johan Caspar Bolich, son of Johan Adam Bolch and his wife, Christina) served in the Revolutionary War. While residing in Lincoln County, North Carolina, he enlisted in 1776 and served as a private in Captain Bateman's Company, Col. Bateman's North Carolina Regiment. He enlisted in November 1778 and served five months in Captain Taylor W. Richardson's Company, Col. Locke's North Carolina Regiment. He enlisted as served 3 months in Captain Davidson's North Carolina Company and went on an expedition against the Indians. He again enlisted in 1781, served 3 months in Captain Horshbarger's Company, Col. Charles McDowell's North Carolina Regiment, and was discharged about December 1, 1781.****

Casper Bolick received pension Claim W18566 allowed on his application executed October 30, 1832 while residing in Lincoln County, North Carolina. His pension began March 4, 1831 in his 78th year. he died August 27th or 28th, 1834 in Lincoln County, North Carolina.

Before the Revolutionary War he resided in Burke County, North Carolina, that part which was later Lincoln County, and afterward Catawba County, North Carolina. He married on December 28, 1779 Maria Magdalena Deal, also known as Mary. She was born August 15, 1756 and died in Catawba County, North Carolina October 25, 1838. Seven children survived their mother and were paid the pensions due their mother. They were all living in 1850. The children were: Casper Bolick, who made an affidavit in Catawba County, N.C., in 1850; Sally Bolick, who married Samuel Austin, a resident of Caldwell County, N.C., in 1850; Regina or Rachel Bolick, born 1805, who married Joseph Killian February, 1824; Polly Bolick, who married Andrew Holler; Elizabeth Bolick, born 1784, who married Phillip Hefner March 14, 1822; Frances or Fanny Bolick, who married Frederick Miller, and Solomon Bolick."

Bob Jones, "Jacob Shook, The Man and His Legacy"

      http://www.shookhistory.org/ShookBook1.htm

"The original land grants on Lyles creek record the owners, Johan Baum in 1750 was the first recorded, Simon Yonoss (Jonas) and Hinrich Shrink, Phillip Hahn, Conrod Mull, Conrad Boobey and Johann Hagins appear soon after.

Then in 1753 the German United Brethren or Moravians purchased a huge tract of land in Lord Granville’s district, location undefined. They set out to determine the land they would select and brought a small team of surveyors across the Catawba to "look for the land". As guide they hired Johann Baum. Being duly impressed with the area between the South Fork of the Catawba and the Catawba proper they decided that this area, which included Lyle’s Creek, would be an ideal spot for their projected colony. John Carteret, Lord Granville set aside this huge parcel, as well as several others, for the Moravians and ceased to sell land there late in 1753.

For ten years the land lay under this reserve. The Moravians decided to place their colony at a less remote area which is today Forsyth County, NC in 1755, but the restriction still remained on the Catawba lands until 1763.

In that year the land was released and it seems that many German settlers had been living on the land in question without deed for up to ten years. In 1763 many of them came to the Land Office in Rowan County at Salisbury, a two-day walk away from home, and registered their claims.

The surnames from Lyle's Creek include Henry Pope, George Schmidt (Smith), Jacob Wissenaut, Adam Aker (Eckard), Adam Bolch, Thomas Cowan, Peter Grunt, Michael Hart, Johan Haun, Andrew Killian, Isaac Lowrance, Peter Stutz, Christian Treffelstadt, Conrad, Joseph and William Whittenburg and William Fulbright. . . .

Then in late 1763 John Carteret, Lord Granville, died and his heirs in England closed the sale of his lands. It was 1778, 15 years later, before the office would open again, and many, many Germans had come to live on the unclaimed lands by then. In December 1778 8,900 acres were registered in Salisbury on Lyle’s Creek alone. Among these names we find Christopher Beekman (Jacob’s Capitan in the Cross Creek Campaign) Adam Bolick, George, Peter and William Deal, George Eslinger, Peter Gront, Frederick Gross, Devault Hunsucker, Johann Isonhower, Frederick Shull, Andrew Fulbright and . . . Johann (Hans) and Jacob Shuke (Shook). In that year Jacob was 29 years old."

Recollections of Harold Bolch, about 1940's:

    "Johan Adam Bolch/Bolick Family Cemetery

Alongside Spencer Road, a two-lane road that runs between old State Highway 70 in Conover, North Carolina to Springs Road, in Hickory, North Carolina is a forgotten cemetery.

Johan Adam Bolch's will states that he owned land lying and situated on the western and northern side of Lyle's Creek. Also land situation in the eastern and southern side of the creek which sets limit between the above. Also he owned a large tract of land north of a branch of Maclings [MacLin] Creek. He lived on an adjoining tract. States Grant, dated 20th day of October 1782. Also States Grant bearing date September 20. 1770 situated on both sides of Iko Creek divided by a line beginning across the said creek in the middle of the whole tract.

"Conclusion: Since this cemetery is located in this area, near Lyle's Creek and Adam Bolch owned land on both sides of the creek, this cemetery was proably located on his original land. The earliest known buried (death) was 1857. The names on the tombstones were BOLCH and dates were after State's Grants September 20, 1770, October 20, 1782, and on July 21, 1774. He purchased additional land that had been held under a Royal Grant."

Last fall a group of Bolch/Bolick descendants of Johann Adam Bolch/Bolick SR and Anna Christina gathered to clean the old BOLCH family cemetery located near Lyle's Creek. The cemetery is on land owned by the Superior Elastic Co and is located on Spencer Road between Springs Road and Hwy 70A, Hickory, NC.

This cemetery sits on land that Adam purchased from Henry Schmitt
Lincoln Co NC deed book 17 pg 176, 22 Aug 1788
Henry Smith & wife Christina (Mecklenburg Co) to Adam Bolek Sr (Lincoln Co); for 27 pds NC money sold 400 acres on SOUTH BRANCH OF LYLES CREE; border: PHILP ADAMS and "THE" WAGON ROAD, INCLUDES A SHOAL AND HIS OWN IMPROVEMENT, granted 21 July 1774 to HENRY Smith

and adjoins the land grant he received Sept 20 1779.

Two of Adam's sons Sebastian and Casper inherited the land when Adam died. Sebastian inherited the Western or Nothern side of Lyle's Creek, adjoin the land of George Adam Schmitt

Casper SR inherited in the Eastern or South side of LYLE'S Creek where the cemetery is located. We know for certain that his son Solomon BOLCH is buried in this cemetery along with his wife Elizabeth BOLCH, dtr of John BOLCH (son of Sebastian) and Christina BOLCH (daughter of Adam JR). Solomon's son Wallis Alexander BOLCH b 6 Sept 1825 died 19 Feb 1857 married his cousin Ellenora BOLCH, dtr of my 3rd great grandfather Henry BOLCH who married Sally Hunsucker.Henry is the grandson of Jacob BOLCH and Maria Salome Grimes. Solomon's son Absalom Ephraim Lawrence Bolch's 1st wife Sally Emaline Propst (descendant of Sebastian BOLCH) b 29 July 1840 died 22 Dec 1874 (dtr of Henry Propst and Mary Magdalene Bowman) and their son William Pinkney BOLCH born 19 July 1862 died 27 Feb 1864 are also buried here.

Sarah Saloma Bolick born 21 Aug 1817 died 26 Jan 1894 is also buried here, dtr of John BOLCH (son of Casper) and Sarah/Sally BOLCH (dtr of Jacob BOLCH and Maria Salome Grimes) married Jonas Bolick whom we believe to be the son of Daniel BOLCH and Susannah K Simmons. Jonas may also be buried here.

Also, many unreadable sand tombstones. So we have at least 4 of the sons of Adam SR that we know of represented in this cemetery. Adam Sr and Anna Christina may very well be buried here we just don't know for sure. Since Casper inherited the land he and his wife Maria Magdalena Deal may also be buried here.

Three of Solomon's sons were killed during the civil war and we have received tombstones from VA and placed them in the cemetery. Thanks to Nancy Stedman Bolick, wife of Bruce Bolick and Bruce's cousin, Danny Bolick for placing the headstones in the cemetery, (both descendants of Jacob BOLCH and Maria Salome Grimes). Danny is also a descendant of Godfrey BOLCH SR. The following are the 3 sons of Solomon and Elizabeth BOLCH.

Joseph BOLCH born 1831 died 19 March 1863 Richmond, Virginia who married Nancy Emeline Pitts children
Sophronia supposedly married Nov 30 1873 John McDorgher but she also married a Mr. Holler as that's how she died, Sarah Elizabeth married Samuel May, William Pinkney married Caroline Mahala Fisher, Julia ann Frances married Bolton Pierce Bass

Emanuel BOLCH born 1835 died 17 Aug 1862 Lovingston, Virginia who married Nancy Pauline/Perline Cline, dtr of Jesse Cline and Margaret Haas/Hauss. They had 1 daughter Susanna S BOLCH b 27 June 1861 Catawba died 3 July 1935 Lincoln Co married John L Gilbert (son of Daniel R Gilbert and Jane Heavner) 16 Aug 1888 Catawba Co. Nancy Cline married 2nd Jonas F Hawn. Nancy and Jonas are buried in the St Timothy's Lutheran Church cemetery. Susanna S BOLCH is buried in Hollybrook Cemetery, Section C , Lincoln Co. North Carolina. She had 6 children: Nancy Elizabeth marr Ephraim Monroe Hallman; Dovie married John Henry Elmore, Lola or Leila, Marshall Emanuel Gilbert married Addie Wilson Gray, Katie A., and Roscoe Lee married Mary Isabelle Tucker. This is new information I don't think anyone knows about.

    Israel Bolch/Bolick b 1840 died 12 Sep 1864, unmarried

On Saturday, October 20th, 2007 we will be dedicating this cemetery and the three sons of Solomon for their civil war service. We plan to have a civil war re-enactment ceremony. We plan to do some further cleaning sometime in the fall, but we haven't set a date just yet. We also will be putting on final touches on the cemetery on Friday Oct 19th.

We would like to fence the cemetery and are asking for donations to accomplish this. You may contact me to tell you where to send any donations. It would be nice as well if we could raise enough money to put a family memorial in there as well with Johann Adam SR and Anna Christina's children, since this was a part of his original property.

All Bolch/Bolick descendants are invited to help us clean and preserve the cemetery, as well as attend the ceremony. I will provide the time once we have set it.
