| Brazil, Clay, IN High School (Postcard, June 1917)
Text printed on obverse: "Brazil High School, like many other Indiana schools, was designed by the Terre Haute architectural firm of Johnson, Miller, and Miller. It was built in 1916."
Iva F. Deal (class of 1916 or 1917) and Thomas R. Payne (class of 1916) graduated from this high school. Iva was probably the first person in her immediate family to complete twelve years of schooling. She learned typing and shorthand and later worked as a stenographer at the headquarters of the American Legion. Thomas R. Payne developed his artistic talent and had a successful career as a commercial artist. The building was designed to house a "comprehensive high school," one that prepared students, especially the majority who would not attend college, for a beneficial role in American society.
The classes of 1916-1917 attended during a period of change in secondary education in the United States. The changes in objectives, no longer the memorization of facts and the classics, were summarized in a thirty-two page report of a committee of the National Education Association and published in 1918 by the U.S. Bureau of Education.
["Selected Moments of the 20th Century; A Work in Progress," edited by Daniel Schugurensky, Department of Adult Education and Counselling Psychology, The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto (OISE/UT)]
"Seven Cardinal Principles of Secondary Education.
This year, after three years of work, the Commission of the Reorganization of Secondary Education, appointed by the National Education Association of the United States, submitted the report "Cardinal Principles of Secondary Education." For the purposes of this commission, secondary education was defined as applying to all pupils of approximately 12 to 18 years of age. This report, which was written at the height of the progressive education movement, would become one of the most influential education documents of the twentieth century.
The commission identified seven main objectives of education: 1.Health; 2.Command of fundamental processes [reading, writing, mathematics]; 3.Worthy home membership; 4.Vocation; 5.Citizenship; 6. Worthy use of leisure; 7. Ethical character. . . ."
