Notes |
- Cecil O'Dell, author of "Pioneers of Old Frederick County Virginia" (Marceline MO: Walsworth, 1995, 623 pp.), aimed to "locate and record all the residents of old Frederick County VA who came there from the mid-1720s up to November 1743, when old Frederick County began keeping records." O'Dell searched "court records, wills, deeds, road petitions, land patents, land surveys, [lawsuits], warrants, grants, and Quaker parish records" in Orange and Spotsylvania Counties VA, the predecessors of Frederick County. O'Dell then searched colonial land records from Fredericksburg VA to New York state and London, England to determine when some 400-500 individuals sold their lands in order to move to Old Frederick County VA. He found that 85% of the original settlers in the Northern Neck, as old Frederick County is known, came from William Penn's colonization in Pennsylvania and as far south as Delaware and northern Maryland, while 5% each came "from New York, lower Maryland, and Virginia east of the Blue Ridge."
(Old Frederick County/Northern Neck VA was subdivided over the years into twelve counties of today's Virginia and West Virginia.)
The surname "Gibbons" is not listed in the index, so it is likely that the first Gibbons arrived in old Frederick County/Northern Neck VA after 1740.
There is on p. 537 a mention of today's "Gibbons Run area (a branch of North River), where the [old colonial] road ran along Hamshire County WV Highway 45/6 north of Gibbons Run" in the vicinity of U.S. 50 toward Frenchburg WV.
Wilmer L. Kerns, "Historical Records of OLd Frederick and Hampshire Counties, Virginia" (Westminster MD: Heritage Books, Rev. ed. 2007), 430 pp. contains on p. 177 some information about James and Mary Gibbons, parents of Jacob Gibbons b. 10 Sep 1745 Frederick, VA and his sister Sarah Gibbons b. 05 May 1742 Winchester, Frederick, VA.
More complete information about the Gibbons family, including texts from some newspaper articles and obituaries, can be found in "Descendants of James Gibbons" at http://www.genealogy.com/users/m/c/c/Vickie-S-Mccracken/FILE/0004text.txt.
