"Son of James & Narcissa (Collins) Thomas. Summerfield was Union Army Officer in the "70th Indiana Infantry," which was under General William T. Sherman. Lt. Thomas was wounded at the battle of Resaca, GA and was transported to a hospital in Tennessee.
Following the war, James returned to Indiana where he married Cindarella Smith. They moved to Kansas where their four children were born:
Edgar Morton, Hattie, Myrta and John Worthington Thomas"
