Membership Records of the Senter Primitive Baptist Church Nathan's Creek, Ashe County, North Carolina 1829-1924:

      "North Carolina, Ashe County

The Baptist Church of Christ at Senter Meeting House was constituted in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty-nine, and fourteen members given up from the different churches to wit: From Piney Creek [seven names], From Silas Creek Church [one name], From Fox Creek Church [one name], From Beaver Creek Church [two names], & From Cranberry Church [two names]. [total was thirteen names; was Reverend Drury Senter the fourteenth member?]

The Presbytery called for and these brethern examined and found orthodox in the principle of the gospel and set apart as a church of Christ to hold their own kees (sic).

      By the Presbytery

      Elder Drury Senter
      Elder Henry Vanover

      Abstract of [Primitive] Baptist Principles:

      1. We believe in one true and living God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost and that these three are one.

      2. We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are the words of God and the only rule of faith and practice.

      3. We believe in the doctrine of election by Grace.

      4. We believe in the doctrine of Original Sin, and in man's impotency to recover himself from the fallen state he is in by nature by his own free will or ability.

      5. We believe that sinners are called, converted, regenerated, and sanctified by the Holy spirit and that all who are thus regenerated or born again by the Spirit of God shall never fall finally away.

      6. We believe that sinners are justified in the sight of God only by the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ.

      7. We believe that Baptism and the Lord's Supper are ordinances of Jesus Christ and that true believers are the subjects of these ordinances and we believe that the true mode of Baptism is by immersion.

      8. We believe in the resurrection and a general judgment and that the joys of the righteous and the torments of the wicked will be eternal.

      9. We believe that no minister has a right to administer the ordinances except such as are regularly called and come under the hands of the presbytery."

The following names appear on the membership roll of the church:

"Senter A.N.; Senter, Peggy; Senter, Matilda; Senter, Ellen; Senter, Nancy; Senter, Cosby d. 13 Apr 1923; Senter, Cledine; Senter, Eli."

In 1853 the Senter Association was formed and a convention was held at Senter Church. This Association was formed from the Mountain and Three Forks Associations. Senter Church at Crumpler, Ashe County, NC was named for Rev. Drury Senter and his son, Rev. Nathaniel Senter.

      Property

Drury received land grants in what was to be Grayson County in 1781, 1839, and 1840. These grants were on Piney Creek and New River. On February 4, 1841 Drury purchased from Elizah and Sarah Baker three tracts of land, totaling 520 acres on Wilson Creek and Beaver Dam Creek, a branch of Wilson Creek (Grayson County Deed Book #9 - Pages 422-23) .

Drury and Polly's house is vacant, but still stands beside Wilson Creek about a mile southwest of Mouth of Wilson on Route 16. It is unclear if they built the house, or if it was already standing when they moved to the property in 1841. The house has been added onto over the years, and could probably accommodate two families. Drury and Polly and some of their children are buried in the family cemetery on the hill above the house."

The religious ceremony may have taken place on 6 June and not been recorded at the court house until 29 June 1809. On the other hand, one or the other date may be incorrect.

In any case, note the spelling of his given name, "Drewry," which probably represents a phonetic pronounciation. Also, note that she married under her informal name, "Polly."

      [Phil Senter]

From official records of the Baptist Church:

Drury was born in Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina on the 25th day of September, 1788. His parents removed with him to Washington County, Virginia about 1792* and there he married on June 6th 1809. In the year 1814 he became a member of the Primitive Baptist Church at St. Clair's Bottom, Virginia and answered the Call of the Lord. In December, 1815 he was licensed to preach in the same church… He laboured as a public minister until 1823 when he was chosen by the Washington Association as their messenger to Sister Association in North Carolina. In the year 1823 he removed to North Carolina and settled in the county of Ashe where he laboured as a public minister in the Mountain and adjoining Association, and his labours were greatly blessed. About the year 1840 he removed to the county of Grayson where he lived until the time of his death on the 10th day of January, 1853. He died of that sly and deceitful destroyer Dispepsa, which flatters but to kill.

      [Betty Carson]

Concerning the obituary of Drury Senter and the "moving to VA 1792". I have the obituary "copied from Minutes of Washington District Baptist Association for the year 1855 by E.J. Sutherland, Clintwood Virginia". He does not say the year he copied it but it is done on an old typewriter. I also have a Genealogy done by Rodney D. Senter about 1972. On page 3 it says "from official records of the Baptist Church: ......His parents removed with him to Washington County, VA (about 1792)........
This appears to be where the 1792 move to VA came from. I don't believe it to be correct as Henry is still on the 1800 census in Cumberland Co.

From Ashe County History, by Fletcher

The Senter Baptist Association was formed at a convention held at Senter Church in Ashe County, named for the renowned Elder Druwry (sp. Var.) Senter, and his equally famous son, Elder Nathaniel Senter. The convention met on October 21st, 1853, and when it had finished its labours there was a new Association - The Senter, named for the two preachers. The Association was made up of four churches from the Three Forks Association (Bear Creek, Beaver Creek, North Fork, and Horse Creek) and five from the mountain Association (Big Helton, Silas Creek, South Fork, Senter and Cranberry). To the Credit of the Senter Association is the first recorded action toward bettering educational facilities in Ashe County. (They had planned to erect a school, but the Civil War forced abandonment of the idea.)
