    Notes
    • "Gottlieb was a prosperous farmer near Kainowe, Kreis Trebnitz, Silesia. After his wife, Karoline, passed April 1853 the decision was made to set sail for America. With daughter Anna (age 19) and sons Karl (21) and David (16) in tow, he set off to what we can only assume was the port of Bremen in Germany. We say probably Bremen because departing passenger lists from this city were destroyed by fire.

Though many other Germans left from the port of Hamburg, we have ruled that out. A thorough search of the records there revealed no record of our Stolpers.

Assuming Bremen, we believe they remained there for an indeterminate period (probably a few days to a few weeks) while they put their affairs together. This band of Stolpers landed at the Port of Quebec in May 1854. From there they traveled, probably via the great inland waterway through the Great Lakes, moving through Detroit. Their journey ended in Milwaukee during June of 1854.

Gottlieb, though only 61, never remarried. Throughout his remaining years, he lived with each of his children at various times. He was living with son David at the time of his passing. Gottlieb never owned land in the United States.

This story is from the Milwaukee Sentinel, pp 1, column 5, dated 12 November 1868. It is entitled, "Cold Bath":

'Shortly before noon yesterday an old man named Gottlieb Stolper, about 75 years of age, attempted to cross Chestnut Street bridge while it was in motion and was caught between the guards on east side of the bridge and precipitated into the river. Mayor O'Neill who happened to be passing, immediately tore down about 12 feet of railing on the approach and threw it to him. Stolper was thus enabled to keep his head above water until aid could be rendered. He was picked up by the steam scow engaged in carrying flour from the mills and set on shore about a block below the scene of his mishap. Great credit is given to Mayor O'Neill for the presence of mind displayed on this occasion and had it not been for the railing thrown to Stolper, he would no doubt have found a watery grave. The captain and crew of the scow are also entitled to praise for their efforts in rescuing the man. Officer Lehsten, who was attending to duties on the west end of the bridge came to his rescue and took the old man into a neighbouring saloon where he ordered everything he could for his comfort. The habit of running over a bridge while it is in motion is not excusable and we hope Stolper's narrow escape from being crushed and drowned will prove a warning to all who witnesseth his peril yesterday.'
