- ...the seventh child of (Johann) Gottlieb Hillger II, was a man of slight stature who possessed a very keen mind. During his boyhood he helped along on the farm and studied hard at school. He was sent to Addison College in Illinois and entered teh teaching profession upon his graduation.
...devoted his entire career to teaching in Lutheran parochial schools. Wherever he taught, he worked hard and faithfully, never sparing himself.
...first position was at Lincoln, MO, starting in 1896. Here as a young teacher he was afflicted with nervous troubles (MS?), which temporarily forced him to resign from teaching for several years. When his health was restored sufficiently, he accepted a call to Eagle Lake, IL, where he taught from 1902 to 1921. Then he transferred to Trinity of Chicago.
....was fond of singing and was member of the Chicago Lutheran Teachers Chorus for many years. He never missed a teachers' conference. During school recesses he always took time to play with the children. He liked to play mahjongg and became an expert carrom player.
At the age of 66 he sometimes contemplated retiring. Suddenly he became ill and a few days later he died on 3 Jan 1939.
