"Helen Pilcher Hall:
My ancestor, William Bennett Payne, was born about 1766 in Virginia and died before 1840. He married Ellen Coleman (b. 1770/1780), probably in Virginia . . . and died before 1850. Both probably died in Clay County, IN.
. . . [William Bennett Payne & Ellen Coleman] had seven children:
Benjamin Coleman Payne b. 1796
William b. 1798
Robert Henly Payne (1799-1874) d. Jackson, Clay County,IN
George Payne b. 1800/1810 d. 1844 Clay County, IN
Henry b. 1814
Susan b. 1819 d. 1905 Boone County, IA
Eliza (about whom I know nothing)"
[Documentation of certain Payne families in Kentucky and Indiana:

U.S. Census Spencer County, KY 1830: "Robert H. Payne, Daniel Payne, George Payne, William Payne, Shadrick Payne" {Spencer County had been formed January 1824 from Bullitt, Nelson, and Shelby Counties}.
U.S. Census Clay County, IN 1840: "Benjamin C. Payne (Jackson), Daniel J. Payne (Lewis), Eleanor Payne (Jackson), George Payne (Jackson), Robert H. Payne (Jackson)."
U.S. Census Clay County, IN 1850 (Payne households): Nancy (Stigler, Payne) Parker b. 1807 Kentucky, Daniel Payne b. 1791 Virginia, Benjamin Payne b. 1796 Virginia, Jesse Payne b. 1800 Unkn, Alexander Pane b. 1815 Iowa.]
Helen Pilcher Hall, continued:
"Sometime before 1820, William Payne, sold what land he had [in Virginia] and took his family (all but Benjamin Coleman Payne) over the Wilderness Trail to Bulls Gap, Hawkins County, TN, [instead of over the National Road from Cumberland, MD to Wheeling, now WV, on the Ohio River]; here they became acquainted with other settlers--the McCulloughs, the Stiglers, the Myers, the Whitecottens--with whom they intermarried. The Paynes moved after a time on to Kentucky and settled for awhile in [Spencer, later] Shelby and Bullitt Counties, KY. In 1831, they made the last leg of the journey [to Indiana]. Benjamin is believed to have joined them in Clay County, IN in 1831 [as evidenced by the deed shown below]."
