    Notes
    • According to the History of Chester County Pennsylvania, Robert Vernon was a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers), but did not take such an active part in Meeting affairs, though the monthly meetings were sometimes held at his house. Robert and his wife and two brothers were Quakers. who were persecuted in England for many years by factions of the English Civil War of Oliver Cromwell following the reign of Charles I. They emigrated with William Penn to the American colonies to enjoy freedom of religion. While still living in England, Robert and his two brothers, Thomas and Randle, were awarded a warrant for land in Pennsylvania at a meeting of William Penn's commissions, which amounted to 625 acres for each of them on adjoining tracts of land. They left England from the Port of Liverpool. On August 14, 1682 the ship, Friendship of Liverpool, Robert Crossman, Master, arrived at Upland, Pennsylvania. Friendship was the 8th of 23 William Penn ships. Robert Vernon and his two brothers were passengers on that ship. Robert Vernon became a farmer and land owner near Nether Providence, Chester County, Pennsylania. A stream flowing through his property was named " Vernon's Run," which became the name of his farm. One historical record states that this area later became Nether Providence Township, Delaware County. This general area is about 30 miles west of Philadelphia.

Ashmead's History of Delaware County, Pennsylvania tells only a slightly different story in Chapter XLVII, Nether Providence Township, pages 652 and 653. Adjacent to Randal Vernon's land, Robert Vernon took up, July 23, 1682, three hundred fifty acres, (this date may be a month early, given the date of August 14, 1682 for the landing of the ship, Friendship, at Upland as stated above.), which extended along Ridley Creek to Upper Providence line. its eastern boundary being the Providence Road. On the tract was the main stem of Vernon Run, and almost all of that part of Media borough in Nether Providence is located in the Original Robert Vernon estate. Early in 1709/1710 he conveyed the homestead tract and the brick messuage thereon to his son, Jacob Vernon. The Ashmead History further says that on May 19, 1702, Robert Vernon purchased 250 acres of land from Joshua Hastings that extended from Ridley Creek to Providence Road. Robert Vernon conveyed this land to his son, John Vernon and Sarah, his wife. Robert Vernon was from Stoke, Acton Parish, Cheshire County, England. The Providence Friends Meeting House was not far from where Robert and his family lived.

Examination of maps of the territory near the town of Chester, Pennsylvania, today, shows that the southern end of Ridley Creek flows into the Delaware River just east of Chester. If one follows it north, it at first lies east of Providence Road and eventually crosses Providence Road. Then Providence Road lies east of Ridley Creek. Therefore, the Vernon properties were somewhere north of where the creek crosses the road. In that area is a road named Media Parkway in the community of Garden City. The information in the paragraph above states that, " ...almost all of that part of Media borough in Nether Providence is located on the Original Robert Vernon estate." One might infer that the community of Garden City is approximately where Robert Vernon lived.

It is worth noting that in the sections of the histories referred to above, Robert Vernon's son, Thomas Vernon, is not mentioned. Robert's son, John, was given 260 acres of land in 1702,and in about 1709, Robert gave his original homestead land to his son, Jacob. There is no record of Robert giving land to his son, Thomas. It is also worth noting that the records of the local Quaker Meeting indicate that Robert's son, Thomas Vernon, was disowned by the Meeting about the time that Robert gave his homestead to his son, Jacob. Contemplating these facts, it is quite possible that the son, Thomas, was not in good standing with his father for, perhaps, a period of many years.
