    1. [S13] Descendants of James Barnett and Elizabeth Keller, Erold Clark Wiscombe (ECW), pp. 10-11:.

"James Edward Barnett m. 30 Sep 1830 Elizabeth or Eliza Lane, sister of Melinda [Lane] who married David Barnett, eldest brother of James Edward Barnett. Melinda and Elizabeth [Lane] were daughters of Thomas and Ann Lane of Harrison, IN. . . .

Land records indicate that James Edward Barnett and his wife Elizabeth [Lane] received land in Putnam County, IN 24 July 1839 and again 16 Feb 1847. On 21 Jan 1842, James Edward Barnett deeded land to his brother, Peter Barnett. The 1840 Census placed James Edward Barnett just six houses away from his brother, Solomon Barnett.

James Edward Barnett said he and his wife Elizabeth lived 37 years together without quarreling. When he went to Harrison County, IN to marry her, he supposed she had told her parents he was coming to marry her. She hadn't told them and he asked her why. She replied, 'I was a little too smart for that. Men do not always do what they say, and what a fix I'd been in then.' . . .

Her mother dreaded to see [her two daughters] go so far away from home. This was her only objection to the match. After the marriage, they rode back to Putnam County, IN, a five day journey, and settled at the old mill where he had built a log cabin.

The bed was in one end [of the cabin] and made by boring holes [in the inside wall] where poles were [inserted]. These were covered with clap boards; then the bedding was put on. They made their own table and cooked in a fireplace.

There they farmed and ran a mill. At first the mill was a partnership of brothers, but in 1845 James Edward Barnett bought out his last partner, brother David Barnett. He built a new dam and enlarged the mill house. These improvements cost $400.

When they had been married about two years, they went (1832?) for a visit to Elizabeth's home in Harrison County, IN to see her parents. It took five days each way. They took turns carrying the baby, and stayed for two weeks. they went again in 1837, but made no more visits to Harison County, IN. [11]

Elizabeth was said to have a fine education for a woman of her day. Her mother, Ann Lane, went in the best society of Harrison County, IN. Elizabeth was never slouchy, but wore nice plain things. . . ."
