3. | Raphael Horwitz (1.Henoch1) was born about 1785. Notes:
This Raphal Gurevich is inferred by the Patronomic Information in the Census and Family Records. Even if he actually existed I am speculating that he belongs to this family. His inferred age seems to fit the family. He could have come from another place, the names in his family do not jibe as much with the other families. Dave Howard, Oct 2005.

4. | Afroim Horwitz (1.Henoch1) was born about 1788 in Horwitz Family Residence, Rezekne, Latgale, Latvia; died on 14 Jan 1880 in Rezekne, Latgale, Lavia. Notes:
Afroim is inferred from the 1897 census. There is an entry for Henoch son of Afroim. We are guessing that this Afroim had a father named Henoch and that he was not a son of Shevel. Time and research will tell us if we have the right connection here.
His son Henoch was listed as 85 in the 1897 census which would give a year of birth for Henoch of about 1812. Assuming Afroim was 24 years old (wild guess) then Afroim would have been born about 1788.
He could be the son of Shevel but Shevel would have been only 17 years old. Of course if Afroim was 21 when Henoch was born then Shevel would have been 21 when Afroim was born.
Who knows if Henoch, the father of Shevel, is really the same Henoch?
Died:
In the table of deaths in Rezekne in 1880 translated by Christine Usdin there is a death reported for Abram Gurvich son of Genukh. He was 85 at the time of his death indicating a birth date of about 1795. The note says the cause of death was old age and that he was from Rezekne originally.

28. | Henoch Hirsch Horwitz/Gurevitch/Gurvich (14.Getzel4, 5.Leiba3, 2.Shevel2, 1.Henoch1) was born in 1838 in Horwitz Family Residence, Rezekne, Latgale, Latvia; died on 18 May 1909 in Horwitz Family Residence, Rezekne, Latgale, Latvia. Notes:
According to Aunt Bessie, her father was in the timber business, where they cut the trees and floated them down the river. She said he was in business with his father and his brothers and that they were well off.
She said her father's family was originally from Moscow. I had assumed this was Moscow, Russia. However, I have discovered that there is a district in Riga along the edge of the river named Moscow and it was an area occupied by Jewish people. They would gather up the timber that had been floated down the river.
Riga is not on the Baltic Sea but on the banks of the River Daugava and was a major export center for timber. Ships came from Briton so freqently there was a large Church of England cathedral in Riga for the crews. Ships also came from France to pick up wood.
The Daugava was a very important river that served as a gateway to Central Europe from the Baltic Sea. The Swedes at one time had a major presence in Easter Europe and controlled the Baltics. They viewed access to the Daugava as strategic.
Today the Daugava defines a portion of the border between the countries of Latvia and Lithuania. The second largest city in Latvia is Daugavpils which is a key inland port on this river. When this area was part of Russia the city was named Dvinsk and had a very substantial Jewish population.
Daugavpils is about half way between the very important city of Vilnius, Lithuania about 100 miles to the south. Vilnius was known as Vilna during the era of Polish and Russian dominance and was the capital of the Jewish sub-Polish state in the Lithuanian region. The city was governed by Jews.
Today Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania but has only a tiny Jewish population as a result of the very effective extermination of Jewish people in the Baltic region during World War II.
About 100 miles to the north of Daugavpils lies the city of Rezekne, the capital of the Latgale Region, also a city with a large Jewish population. Our family comes from Rezekne but they clearly had Horwitz relatives in Daugavpils and Riga to carry out their very important timber business.

He married again and Bessie did not get along with her new step-mother. Her family was living in Latvia.
Bessie did not know the name of the first wife. She had died many years before. Bessie was the daughter of the second wife who she said was Basheva Yaffa.
Bessie explained that the family paid for their relocation to America by working and saving. They also sold the family home and cows. They settled up with their step-mother and used what was left to go to Chicago.
Bob Schwartz has Bertha Louria as the wife of Henoch Hirsh. This is something we will have to work on.
The 1897 census stated that he was literate that he had been educated in the parish school and that the was etiher a flax merchant or timber merchant. Aleksandrs said it was difficult to read the text and there is only a sight difference between the way the two words are spelled. He though flax merchant might be a better translation. However, wood merchant would be consistent with what Aunt Bessie said his business was.
They were residing in a single family dwelling at house 10 on Dvoryanskaya Street in Rezekne, Latvia. The house was wooden and covered with wood.
He was apparently a hard working, wealthy, soft spoken (never used strong language)man. He was in business with his father and brothers. Their family was known for their financial success in the lumber business. Dave Howard Aug 2004.
Name:
According to the 1897 All Russia census taken in the Rezekne area his name was listed as Gurevitch Genoch Girshev. The Girshev is the patronymic for son of Hirsch. Our researcher, Aleksandrs Feigmanis, notes that this is an error.
The Rezekne vital records entry at July 5, 1882, recording the birth of their son, Yeruchim (Reuben), shows his name correctly as Genoch-Girch Gurvitch, son of Getzel-Leizer Gurvitch. His wife was shown as Baseva, daughter of Morduch.
Because of all the different languages spoken and written in this region of the world the same name is written in many different ways in the official records. They are all the same name:
His first name was Henoch, Genoch, Henech, Genech they are all variations of the Bible prophet Enoch (English).
His second name was Hirsch, Hirsh, Girsh which are all versions of the same word meaning stag deer.

I did not think Basheva was Genech's wife in 1866 but the name for the female baby, who possibly died at birth looks like a combination of Basheva and Genech.

Birth:
According to his death certificate with information provided by Milton Horwitz, his date of birth was 26 Oct 1886 and he was 53 years old. Minnie, his wife, was shown as age 55 at the time of his death.
That would have made him about 10 or 11 years old when the 1897 All Russia Census was taken. The census record indicates there was a Simcha who was 14 in the family. This would indicate a birth year of 1882/3. The census had other errors. We are assuming the death certificate and naturalization papers are more accurate.
His naturalization document 899550 shows that he and Minnie became citizens when he was 32 years old, on 18 September 1919. At the time Minnie was 33 and Milton was age 4. They were living at 2019 Iowa Street, Chicago, IL at the time. It indicated that he was 5 ft 3 inches tall, white, fair complexion with brown eyes and brown hair.

Notes:
The following notes have been contributed by Bernie Dorin:
Florence, and her twin sister Bessie, were the youngest of the Horwitz children and the last to immigrate to the United States. They arrived in about 1909, making them about 13 years old. The twin girls were accompanied on their journey by their older sister Ida (abt 23) and brother Morris (abt 25) (we think). (Dates and ages must be considered as approximate.)
Ida and Morris may have been mature, but the twin girls were certainly very young for such a trip. It is difficult to imagine the thoughts and emotions of these uneducated Jewish children as they left their rural home near the Baltic Sea for “the other side of the world”. Not to dwell on it, but the context of this all important trip must have been the frightening experience of a lifetime. Did they, as rural Jews in the Russia at the beginning of the Twentieth Century, experience the persecution associated with the pogroms? Probably!
While the motivation for emigrating from Latvia was undoubtedly for religious freedom, to escape persecution, and for economic opportunity, unhappiness with their stepmother was also a factor for this band of four. Separation from the security of home into an alien and probably hostile appearing world of unfamiliar people, languages, and customs could well have been the material for fantasies and nightmares for years to come. Will the streets really be lined with gold? Will a man in a uniform (a Cossack) separate me from my family and send me back, alone? Will we find our brothers in some strange place called Chicago?
Do we have the empathy, secure in our twenty first century lives, to put ourselves in the shoes of those children? The questions of a lifetime are the ones I didn’t ask. In retrospect, the story of the journey is just a small part of a full, rich story of a life that starts at a time and in a place I know almost nothing about. As I write this, I see my mother’s face and sense her always gentle and comforting presence. She was not a story teller; with five boys to look after she seemed to always be concerned with the “here and the now”. At least that’s how it seemed to a young boy who took it all for granted.
I don’t know the port of embarkation to the “new world”, so I don’t know how my mother got there from her village of Resekne, Latvia. Whether it was by train or horse drawn conveyance, it was probably a new, exciting, and frightening experience. The ocean leg of the journey was almost certainly in steerage class, by all accounts very unpleasant accommodations. I don’t know the time of year she and her siblings set out, but I hope the trip across the Atlantic was not in the winter. The North Atlantic can be a nasty place in the winter.
I have been told that her older brothers preceded this little, last band of the Henoch Hirsh Horwitz family, entering North America through Canada and settling in Chicago. I assume that Florence, Bessie, Ida, and Morris entered this country through Ellis Island. I made this assumption because I do remember being told that the girls worked in a glove factory on the lower East Side of New York. They worked very long hours for very little pay in what is now referred to as a “sweatshop”. The idea, of course, was to accumulate the money to complete the trip to Chicago and family. I have done some research of the information in the Ellis Island website, but I did not find any reference to my mother or her brothers or sisters.
We have no details about what her new life was like for Florence, newly arrived in Chicago. I assume that given her young age she must have lived with one of her brothers. I do know that she had a social life beyond her immediate family. I heard references to, and saw pictures of, women she called her “girl friends”. I also don’t know if she worked outside of the home.
In due course Florence met Isadore (Issie) Dorin, a recent arrival from Poland. I don’t know how they met or how long they “courted”, but these two “greenhorns” (my father’s term) married on November 25, 1917. Isadore was a baker, having apprenticed at the age of nine in Warsaw. His father had already left for America, so his grandfather arranged for the apprenticeship, with the explanation that “you will always have something to eat”. That prediction was accurate. Isadore always had work and was able to provide a good home and education for their five sons.
The family lived on the west side of Chicago until about 1935, when we moved the northwest side. That was to be the family home for more than the next quarter of a century. All five boys went to elementary and high school in Chicago. We survived the Great Depression in good shape, but with three sons in the military during the war, WWII was a time of constant worry and anxiety for Ma and Pa Dorin. All three returned safely.

Per cenus records in Latvia she may have been one year older than Bessie and named Bluma when she lived in Rezekne.

Uncle George was a sweet man. He always called me honey even when I was married and in my 30s. He used to call me up every year to see how I was.
Uncle George had epilepsy and could never have a drivers license. For years he was in the wholesale lingerie business as a salesman.
From time to time he would work with my father. There was a time when my dad wanted to have and auto parts store on the same lot with his Union 76 gas station. Uncle George worked in that auto parts store for a while.
Uncle George also worked in my dad's auctioning business. I never saw him do anything. I do remember him giving me advice. "Keep your money in your shoe. You won't lose it and it wont get stolen."
It was always nice when Uncle George came over to visit when we were little. He would fill his coat pockets with change (usually nickles) and let us reach in just one time and pull out all the coins we could get.
Uncle George was briefly married to Aunt Ruth who had a daughter by a prior marriage. They came to California when we did. When we were living in a rental house in Sierra Madre in 1948 they lived nearby in Pasadena.
Unfortunately this marriage never worked out. They were divorced. Uncle George never remarried and never had children.
For years and years he lived in Hollywood, California on Cherokee near the intersection with Hollywood Boulevard. On Cherokee just south of Hollywood Boulevard was where the IRS had an office. I had to go to that office once with Laurel Woodland Mayland when she was working with me to pick up a car.
When Uncle George was young he was a good basketball player and he had a basketball scholarship to some college out of town. My dad could remember that when he came home he would bring all his dirty laundry so his mother could wash it for him.
My dad had to go to work at age 13 to help support the family. Uncle George was excused because of his athletic scholarship. I don't think Uncle George ever graduated.
After my dad died in 1974 Uncle George stayed close to Uncle Bernie. However, after Uncle Bernie died he apparently connected up with Sol Horwitz.
Uncle George was not a Horwitz. He was the son of Rose Segal's first husband, Jaffe. However, when Dad and Uncle Bernie changed their last names to Howard so did he.
Sol Horwitz was kind enough to make sure Uncle George was taken care of after he passed away.
Everyone loved Uncle George. He was sweet and gentle. I remember him showing a few soft shoe dance steps. He had smooth moves. He was a beloved member of the extended Horwitz family.

Dave Howard's notes:
Notes for BERNARD HOWARD:
My Uncle Bernie was always a loving uncle. He always treated me as an idividual and not as a little kid. He would talk my dad, Harry, into going fishing and I got to go along.
One of my favorite memories of an exciting experience with him was when I was about 8 he and I had to find our way from El Monte, CA to the Silver Lake District of Los Angeles. It was a family get together at my mother's sister's, Loretta's, home. Bernie had never been there. I had been there once. I was his guide. He was patient and loving all the way and we arrived.
Bernie served in the Navy during World War II on board a ship as a baker. He saw combat action and was wounded in the leg. He was a great Navy man and had an amazing number of tattoos. We children loved to see them. They were colorful but the coup de grace were the hinges on the insides of his elbows.
From time to time he and Harry would be in business together. Gas station, auto parts, and used industrial equipment dealilng.
When he and Marie moved from Chicago they first lived upstairs in the house next door to us. He finally bought a home in Azuza, CA where they lived for many years.
I remember when both Alan J. and Martin were born. They were the light of his life.
Bernie and Marie divorced. Bernie and Barbara fell in love and married. She had been Harry's secretary (now they are called aministrative assistants) at his machinery dealership.
Bernie and Barbara built a successful heavy machinery dealership buisiness. He told me the secret to his success was to make 1% on every deal. He would hold up one finger and give me a wink when he said that because we both knew that 1% to him neans 100%.
Bernie was always a heavy smoker. He would tell us that it was a great pleasure and was not harmful. Perhaps the smoking contributed to his pancreatic cancer. They operated on him but to no avail. When he knew he only had a few months left he bought a motor home. He and Barbara spent his last days driving around together and visiting friends and relatives.
He came to Saratoga, CA and visited me and my family.
He died way too early.

176. | Oscar Levin (82.Ida6, 28.Henoch5, 14.Getzel4, 5.Leiba3, 2.Shevel2, 1.Henoch1) was born on 4 Dec 1918 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA; died on 24 Aug 2005 in Webster, Harris, Texas, USA; was buried in Pearland, Brazoria, Texas, USA. Notes:
During WW II my dad was stationed in Galveston as chief radio operator for the coast guard. Dad and mom met at a USO dance. My father wanted to walk my mother home after the dance; however, my maternal grandfather was strict and would meet her after these events and escort her home.
Dad began to call on mom and they eventually began ?chaperoned? dating. Daddy always said he not only fell in love with my mom, but also her father?s extraordinary spaghetti and meatballs and my grandma's decadent desserts.
Before the war was over dad was reassigned to Alaska. He asked mom to marry him before he left, but she turned him down and returned to college. When the war ended mom sent a Christmas card to Dad. She didn't know his location so the card was sent to the coast guard base in Galveston. The card was forwarded to his Alaskan base and once again forwarded to his mother?s house in Chicago! Alas, he sent her a telegram and asked again that she marry him. This time she agreed. He took a train to Galveston, arrived on a Wednesday and they were married the following Sunday.

I must say, my folks had a very warm and loving marriage. My brothers and I enjoyed a wholesome, lovely childhood in Galveston. Dad owned and operated a shop called Island TV and Electronics, which sold and repaired televisions and other different types of electronic devices.
We spent most of our weekends swimming, boating, fishing, crabbing, sailing, and visiting with my mom's family. Dad developed non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma around 2003. Although he went through aggressive cancer treatment he died August 24, 2004. Dad liked to talk about his childhood in Chicago. His best friend was one of his 1st cousins, Hal Dorin. I?m not sure if Hal's still alive. He would be in his 90s. Hal and dad shared many childhood adventures. They stayed in touch until daddy?s death.

179. | Robert P Dorin, MD (83.Florence6, 28.Henoch5, 14.Getzel4, 5.Leiba3, 2.Shevel2, 1.Henoch1) was born on 6 Sep 1918 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA; died on 5 May 2014; was buried in Colma, San Mateo County, California, USA. Notes:
The following notes have been contributed by Bernie Dorin:
Bob was always the handyman of the family: carpenter, plumber, electrician. Perhaps that was because he was the eldest son; more likely it was because he had the requisite aptitudes. Both he and brother Hal were “ham” radio operators, communicating with their cousin Oscar and other “hams” worldwide.
After earning a BS from the University of Chicago in Chemistry and a MS from the University of Illinois in biochemistry Bob “matriculated” to the U.S. Army, where he supervised a laboratory in an Army hospital. After receiving his commission in 1944 he returned to Chicago and married Shirley Blumenthal.
After the war, Bob and Shirley returned to Chicago and Bob returned to the University of Illinois to earn an M.D. After his internship at Cook County Hospital, they moved to Redwood City, CA, where they still reside. Bob essentially had two careers, one of 20 years as a general practitioner in Redwood City, and a second of 25 years with the Veterans Administration in Menlo Park, CA.
Shirley and Bob met when both were students at the University of Chicago, where Shirley earned a Bachelor’s in Science. She worked as a dietician at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. In the California chapter of her life, she earned a California Teaching Credential, an MS in Child and Family Psychology, and a MFCC license. It should be noted that Shirley’s uncle was Admiral Hyman Rickover, the father of our nuclear navy.

180. | Harold C Dorin, MD (83.Florence6, 28.Henoch5, 14.Getzel4, 5.Leiba3, 2.Shevel2, 1.Henoch1) was born on 27 Sep 1919 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA; died on 19 May 2019. Notes:
Hal worked his way through college and received his BS degree in chemistry at the University of Illinois. He then volunteered for service during World War II. Because of his ham radio expertise, he found himself in the Signal Corps attached to the Air Forces. He did research and development in RADAR at the University of Chicago and at MIT and several Air Force bases.
After the war, he worked at Quaker Oats Research Labs in Chicago doing research on fungicides and ultrasonics. While there, he was given the choice of becoming the plant manager at Quaker's facility at St. Joseph, Missouri.
But Hal always wanted to be an MD, so he applied in person at two medical schools in Chicago and was told that this was July and the incoming classes had been selected for September and that there was a long waiting list." He was about to leave the Chicago Medical School premises when the secretary called him back and said, "someone had just dropped out of the incoming freshmen class and let's see if the Dean is available." Hal and the Dean had a long conversation and then the Dean said, "My boy, you're in." WOW!!
Hal married Virginia while he was in medical school. Upon completion of the four years, they moved to southern California for internship and then family practice. They had two fine sons, Paul and Ronald. Hal and Virginia were married for 24 years. She died of cancer.
Hal retired after 44 years and for the past four years has been serving as a volunteer physician at the nearby Harbor Free Clinic. Incidentally, Hal also taught for the UCLA Medical School for more than 25 years. (Note written July 2003)
Hal is happily married to Sharon, fishes when he can, hikes daily, plays tennis, and with Sharon, pays loving attention to their grandchildren. Hal met Sharon when she was a volunteer in surgery at a local hospital. He had just finished doing surgery and they eyed each other when he went to meet the patient's family. That was 23 years ago. They courted eight years and now have been married for 15 years.
Sharon had received her BS degree at the University of Oregon and then taught elementary school for six year in Orange County. She later taught Medical Terminology and Medical Transcription in the adult education system. At the present time, she diligently takes care of her two rose gardens at home, likes to travel, plays tennis, loves to spoil the grandchildren and now volunteers in Helping Hands associated with Paul Newman's camps and assisting in care of the handicapped.
Hal had the good fortune to be stationed in Macon, GA, near cousin Henry3 (Reuben’s son) for a while. Henry was a dentist, and therefore an officer (a major) with married officers’ housing. Hal was able to socialize with Henry and wife Esther, which provided relief from his Army routine.

182. | Stuart Dorin (83.Florence6, 28.Henoch5, 14.Getzel4, 5.Leiba3, 2.Shevel2, 1.Henoch1) was born on 9 May 1924 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA; died in 1958 in California, USA. Notes:
Bernie Dorin contributes:
Stu (originally named Seymour) was the first of the Dorin brothers to go to war. He enlisted in what was then called the Army Air Corps soon after graduation from high school in June 1942. Stu was by then a very able auto mechanic, but the military needed radio operators and he had the requisite aptitude. After radio operator school he received gunnery training and was assigned to a B-25 crew with whom he flew many missions until the end of the war.
It is my belief that when Stu returned to civilian life he wanted a quiet life. I think he had seen too much of the war. He returned to auto mechanics, met and married Margie, and settled into sought after quiet life.
They moved to Long Beach, California with two of Margie’s three children from a prior marriage. Stu died at age 34. much too young! Shortly before Stu died, the youngest son, Louis, was killed in an automobile accident while driving to the hospital to visit Stu. Several months later Margie underwent surgery and unexpectedly died. Hal, the romantic in the family, said she died of a broken heart. Why not?
I have lost track of their daughter Sylvia. My last knowledge of her was that she was married, and, I think, living in the Midwest. The eldest son. Francis, is a doctor, practicing in Galesburg, Illinois. I will always believe that Stu and Margie were good to and for each other.

184. | Bernard Dorin (83.Florence6, 28.Henoch5, 14.Getzel4, 5.Leiba3, 2.Shevel2, 1.Henoch1) was born on 8 Nov 1929 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA; died on 16 Dec 2008 in Torrance, CA. Notes:
Bernie Dorin's notes:
I was the fourth of the five boys, and I grew up on Chicago’s northwest side. I learned to play the saxophone while in high school, and played with local dance bands and small combos for the next ten years. It was an excellent source of extra income for a poor student and then a newlywed, as well as a lot of fun.
After high school I went to the University of Illinois at Navy Pier in Chicago. But after a year as a pre-med, I knew I had made a mistake. I was following the path that Bob and Hal had taken, instead of finding my own path. Fortuitously, just at that time the U.S. Navy offered a one year enlistment (with a reserve obligation). The thought of going away for a year seemed like a wonderful opportunity to think things through independently. When I arrived at boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Station, I learned that most of the others in the company I was assigned to were there for the same reason.
That one year in the Navy, July 1948 to July 1949, turned out to be a great adventure. After twelve weeks of boot camp, I was assigned to the USS Midway, the newest and largest aircraft carrier in the fleet. During the next nine months we went to the Mediterranean, with ports of call in Europe. Later in the year we went to Panama and Cuba. Not a bad year for a kid who had never been very far from Chicago until then.
The high point of the year for me came when we went to Cannes, France. The Navy had arranged for a dance for the Sixth Fleet at one of the luxury hotels across from the beach. The band from the Midway was to provide the music. As luck would have it, good for me, bad for the other guy, one of the saxophone players became ill, and I took his place, which meant extra time ashore for rehearsal and the dance.
After the Navy I went to Wright Junior College for a little more than a year to ease back into studying and to decide where to continue my education. I got a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from Northwestern University, and later an MBA from the University of Chicago.
I met Mary Ellen Johnson in May 1955, and we got married on New Year’s Eve that same year. Gregory, Mary’s son from her first marriage, was two years old, and I legally adopted him early the next year. Elizabeth (Beth)4 joined the family on October 19, 1956.
My job with Gulf Oil took us from Chicago to Houston. TX in 1960. We moved again in 1963, this time to the Los Angeles area for a job with Tidewater Oil. The very next year they wanted me to move to New York. I opted to accept a position with Union Oil, and stayed at Union in the Los Angeles area until my retirement in December 1990. I also taught a couple of courses in the Marketing curriculum in the UCLA Extension Program, on and off for about 17 years, just for the fun of it.
When the children got to high school age, Mary Ellen went back to school. What started with a couple of courses in art history ended up as a Master’s degree in psychology and an MFCC license. Mary Ellen split her career between private practice and work in Chemical Dependency at Kaiser Permanente. She is now retired. We live in Torrance, CA.
Greg has a daughter, Katie, from his first marriage. He is now married to Denise Bornino, who brought three daughters to the family: Twins Christina and Nina, and Angela. Greg is president of a small international pet food company. He and Denise live in Carlsbad, CA and Franklin, TN.

185. | Jack Dorin (83.Florence6, 28.Henoch5, 14.Getzel4, 5.Leiba3, 2.Shevel2, 1.Henoch1) was born on 6 May 1932 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA; died on 16 Jan 1989 in Torrance, California. Notes:
Bernie Dorin's comments:
Jack was the fifth and youngest of the Dorin boys. I once told a friend that we could have had our own basketball team, but we wouldn’t have any bench strength (in jest, because we were all too short), and his reply was “But you would all be first string”. I thought we were.
This is telling on my mother, but I think she would forgive me. By the time Jack came along, I think she was a little jealous of her twin sister, Bessie. Ma yearned for at least one daughter, and Bessie had four! She never made us wear dresses.
Jack played the tenor saxophone, and started working with local bands while in high school. After a stint in the Army as an M.P., Jack returned to Chicago and married ROSEMARIE, his high school girlfriend. After a while they moved to Torrance, California. The marriage produced four more Dorins: Donna4, Denise4, Dennis4, and Delise4. (I think there’s a pattern there!).

Died:
Note from Gail susan Weinberg Murray read at the funeral of Jill Helberg in June 2004:
I am so sorry that I couldn’t be here today. I wanted to honor my cousin Jill and to give whatever comfort I could to Irwin, my Uncle Ralph, Scott and Becky. We live in Pittsburgh and it’s my son’s graduation from grade school today, and my children’s last day of school is tomorrow. I think that Jill would have understood. Being a mother was paramount to her. I’m certain that her love for Scott and Becky and Irwin added years to her life. They should know how important they are to have inspired her to live longer.
Jill was always a special cousin to me. We were only 9 months apart in age. We grew up together. I’ll always remember playing with the Skipper dolls that my Aunt Alice gave us. She came to my house in Indiana where we’d bake apple pies and have my sister Ellen pull us in the wagon with her bike. I would visit her in Skokie where we’d go to the Bagel Bakery and ride 2 wheelers over the curbs. I remember all the intrigue of high school. I was lucky enough to go to Hawaii with her when she graduated from college. We’d joke about how Irwin cried dramatically and hysterically at the airport upon our departure to embarrass Jill, which he succeeded in doing.
Later Jill had a knitting business called “Just for You.” She made beautiful baby blankets and other accessories. When I moved across the country, I told Jill that it felt like home when I unpacked the blankets that she’d made for my children.
I’m so glad that I was able to visit with Jill in April. She readily agreed to get together. She drove around Buffalo Grove showing me the sights. As always, she looked beautiful. Before she left I told her that she seemed like she had more energy than me. She said that she’d probably go home and take a nap. But Jill was always like that... she’d rise to the occasion. Whenever I saw her she always looked great and was good natured and funny. She made sure that she made the most of every event.
Jill would always discount her health problems. I never heard her be bitter or even complain. Jill told me that every age got better for her, and that she treasured every day that she had. I think that’s the message she’s given us.
Thank you for letting me share my thoughts with you.
