- When Otto Turner was about six or seven years old, Otto and his mother were caught in a tornado in or near Mattoon, Illinois. His mother died in the storm, & Otto was badly injured. When he was found in a ditch he was believed to be dead. Later, it was discovered that he was alive, and he was taken to a hospital. As a result of his injuries, physicians placed a metal plate in his skull which he had for the rest of his life.
Otto was raised by his sister, Harriet, in Clinton, Indiana, where he became a painter and decorator. For many years he worked in a hotel in Terre Haute, Indiana, just a short way from Clinton, painting the hotel interiors. He was a member of he 1928 graduating class of Clinton High School; Clinton Lodge no. 1501 Loyal Order of the Moose; Clinton Half Century Club; and Local 297. He is buried in Roselawn Memorial Park in Clinton, Indiana.
