    • In a note to some of her cousins, Susan Richter-Beckley, wrote on 13 May 2007:
Bonny, you may remember his two-toned green Pontiac panel truck. That was his vehicle for all his travels in those years. The inside of it smelled like Geritol and dog food. He kept hunting dogs in Clinton. When his health began to fail, he went back to Clinton and stayed.

I knew what Geritol smelled like because he used to drink it in the house, too. It was gross.
He'd come visit us and stay for about 3 weeks each time. My mother used to say she couldn't get anything done while he was there, but she never shooed him out of the kitchen, where he would sit all day talking and talking and talking. And drinking coffee and rolling cigarettes and smoking And talking. That's how I got to know him some, because while he was talking, I was listening. I wish I could remember more of what he said, but it's been a long time.

(Note from Dave Howard: For those of you who are too young to remember, Geritol was a much-advertised elixir for older people. Its combination of vitamins and other healthy items restored youthful vim and vigor.)
    • In a note to some of her cousins on 14 May 2007, Susan Sladden wrote:

I was only 7 years old when Roy died but all these things that Susan has said here seems accurate to me. The way I understood things was that once my mother [Joan Wilma Peck] married my father and they moved with my mother's son, Tom, to Georgia, Roy left Lois. My mother never moved out of her parent's home until then, (except when she lived with her half sister, Miki/Mildred, until Lois and Roy followed to FL). So she was 25 when she married my dad and they moved away for him to go to seminary college in Decatur, GA. Tom was nearly 6 years old by then and had of course, lived with my mom and her parents. After they left, there was no one left in the house but Lois and Roy and I don't think they were ever too crazy about each other.

In the 4 years that we (my mom became immediately pregnant with me), were away from FL, I don't think that Lois ever visited us in GA, AL or VA. Roy did though. I think he best understood my mother and her problems and when she was in a good mental state, he greatly enjoyed her company. He was also very close always to Tom who at some point began taking him for weeks at a time during the summers to go hunting, etc. I remember his old station wagon also as he came to stay with us at least several times a year, primarily to care for my mom. Jimmy and Janet did this also.

    Notes
    • Roy and Lois never divorced. I believe that Lois received some sort of pension from Roy, perhaps a miner's union pension, and certainly social security as his widow. He left her the house in Fort Lauderdale. The last few years of his life he traveled around the country, working for spells out west and in Georgia.
