    Notes
    • In this entry, the children of "Unknown Diehl b. Germany" were grouped together based on information contained in:

E.H. Diehl, "Addenda to Diehl Genealogy of 1915" (Berlin, PA: Berlin Press, 1930), p. 140-142.

The first volume, "Diehl Families of America," (Ipava, IL; Rutland VT: Tutle Antiquarian Books, Feb 1915) contained no mention of families with a surname spelled "Deal."

E.H. Diehl contacted in the years prior to publication of each volume (1915 and 1930 respectively) families throughout the United States of German descent with the surname of "Diehl/Deel." He listed only one family line, that of China Grove, Rowan, NC with the surname of "Deal." Even then he was puzzled as to why this family in North Carolina changed the spelling from "Diehl," clearly of German origin, to "Deal."

The compiler, E.H. Diehl may have believed that in his day all the families with a surname spelled "Deal" descended from lines that originated in the British Isles rather than in Germany. If so, he probably looked upon the "Deal clan" in China Grove as an exception because their ancestors had emigrated from Germany to Rowan, NC.

In any case, descendants of various Diehl lines provided all of the content for his two volumes. His entry for the Diehl/Deal line of China Grove was typical. The compiler quoted no documents and cited no other references.

E.H. Diehl commenced his entry for this family line with the title, "Diehl-Deals." He did not mention by name or inference the parents of the three brothers or their place of origin in Germany.

The parents evidently did not migrate to Philadelphia with the three brothers. According to the compiler, each of the brothers sailed from Rotterdam to Philadelphia, spent some time in Pennsylvania, and then migrated to Rowan County, NC and settled in the area now known as China Grove.
