Notes |
- During WW II my dad was stationed in Galveston as chief radio operator for the coast guard. Dad and mom met at a USO dance. My father wanted to walk my mother home after the dance; however, my maternal grandfather was strict and would meet her after these events and escort her home.
Dad began to call on mom and they eventually began ?chaperoned? dating. Daddy always said he not only fell in love with my mom, but also her father?s extraordinary spaghetti and meatballs and my grandma's decadent desserts.
Before the war was over dad was reassigned to Alaska. He asked mom to marry him before he left, but she turned him down and returned to college. When the war ended mom sent a Christmas card to Dad. She didn't know his location so the card was sent to the coast guard base in Galveston. The card was forwarded to his Alaskan base and once again forwarded to his mother?s house in Chicago! Alas, he sent her a telegram and asked again that she marry him. This time she agreed. He took a train to Galveston, arrived on a Wednesday and they were married the following Sunday.

- I must say, my folks had a very warm and loving marriage. My brothers and I enjoyed a wholesome, lovely childhood in Galveston. Dad owned and operated a shop called Island TV and Electronics, which sold and repaired televisions and other different types of electronic devices.
We spent most of our weekends swimming, boating, fishing, crabbing, sailing, and visiting with my mom's family. Dad developed non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma around 2003. Although he went through aggressive cancer treatment he died August 24, 2004. Dad liked to talk about his childhood in Chicago. His best friend was one of his 1st cousins, Hal Dorin. I?m not sure if Hal's still alive. He would be in his 90s. Hal and dad shared many childhood adventures. They stayed in touch until daddy?s death.
