Excerpt from obituary, Terre Haute Evening Gazette: ". . . Allen was 'eldest' son of [stipulated] attorney Albert Payne; Allen instantly killed with a premature shot in lower vein block coal mine; his 'buddy's'' eyes were blown out and the premature explosion caused Allen to be badly mutliated losing almost head from his shoulders; . . . Allen leaving wife and two children. . . ."
