Notes |
- Sir Ralph De Vernon, sixth Baron of Shipbrook, first became a priest and was known as the Rector of Hanwell. The Barony of Shipbrook was first inherited by Sir Ralph's brother, Warine. In turn Warine had three daughters and a son, Sir Warin, who was a great English knight that died in battle in France. Because his son died, the elder Warine died without a male heir. Sir Ralph De Vernon, the Rector of Hanwell, went to court and was successful in winning the title of Baron of Shipbrook and one half of the estates away from his three nieces. Sir Ralph quietly set aside his priesthood and vow of celibacy and took up with a woman named Cecilia Crew, (Lysons says there was no marriage certificate) and fathered two sons, one of which inherited the barony. This fact has given the Shipbrook branch of the family an air of scandal that was spoken of in whispers. There was also a buxom widow, Maud Grosvenor, who is listed as his wife, by whom he had a daughter, Eustatia.
