| Nauvoo Brickyard New residents of the growing city of Nauvoo were anxious to build solid brick homes for shops and residences. In 1840 workers in seven brickyards labored to meet the demand, five on the bluff and two on the flats. The workers in these yards were capable of producing four million bricks in a season. |
| Brick oven The area around Nauvoo contained the three ingredients necessary for making bricks: clay containing iron oxide, sand and water. |
| Brick making demonstration A brickmaker shows how bricks were formed, dried and baked in Old Nauvoo.
Between 1839 and 1846, 350 brick building were built here. When restoration began in the 1960, 49 of them still stood. |
| Sample bricks Thomas Bateman, Sr. had a brick making business in Manchester. He and his sons, as well as several of his grandchildren, worked in the Nauvoo brickyards to earn money to maintain the families and provide for the trip west. |
